@stefano Created:

It's me, Stefano, the BSD and illumos Cafe Barista - aka @stefano@bsd.cafe and @stefano@illumos.cafe

I'm testing something cool - #littleFedi !

This instance is efficiently running on a Raspberry PI Zero W, powered by #NetBSD.

I'll post general stuff - for more littleFedi news and updates, follow my other profile: @stefano@littleone.littlefedi.social

@redflegias@social.umoja.it riprenditi presto! Entri grondante, esci surgelato.

The mural features Wile E. Coyote a fake tunnel opening, directly referencing the classic cartoon gag. A silver car has crashed head on into it, crumpled, with traffic cones around it.

Life meets art, head on ... meep-meep!

This accident actually happened. In Monterrey in Mexico a driver crashed into a concrete wall decorated with a trompe-l'œil mural of a Looney Tunes tunnel.

I still find this fact quite amazing, especially seeing as I have required full vps Mastodon hosting for the last 5 years. Just incredible!

Just a little reminder on littleFedi's efficiency

The instance https://rpi0w.stefanomarinelli.it - with my user @stefano@rpi0w.stefanomarinelli.it - has been running for over a month on a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD.
Under normal operation, it uses 58 MB of RAM, including caches. And it shows no signs of slowness!

Good night, world.
Even though it may sometimes seem strange, you are populated by many fantastic creatures, even of the human species.

@rl_dane@polymaths.social Enjoy your digital detox time and...we'll be here when you'll be back.

Take care of yourself!

Today I learned, if you accidentally delete your Mastodon account, it will send out delete notifications to everyone who follows you so that they stop following you. Reinstating your account is not enough.

Update: Learned a lot about Mastodon during all this! Thanks everyone.

It's Sunday evening and something just came to mind.

When you think of the Commodore 64, what is the first video game that pops into your head?
I'll start: strangely enough, Skool Daze came to my mind.

Boosts appreciated!

Hola mundo!

Larga vida a littlefedi!

I am playing with Visual Editor

The first time I ever used an editor like this was in Wordpress approximately 100 years ago.

I was a thinner man back then, less grey, in less pain.

I could often be hear proclaiming:

Who the fuck are you? Why have you been following me around? Is that a camera!? Are you some kind of cop!!?

In a panic I would run :

sudo rm -rf /

in an attempt to destroy all of the evidence of the crimes I had not committed.

This thing appears to be working well and I smell I really appreciate the effort that goes into something like this.

I am not much of a programmer. I studied it once at University and failed out. You can see just how bad it really is on Codeberg.

I am however really good at:

  1. Breaking things
  2. trying to do weird stuff
  3. documenting what I did
  4. explaining what I thought would happen
  5. explaining what actually happened

This is important because:

  • not every system is the same and software can behave unexpectedly on someone else's computer
  • "idk this shit dont work" is a shitty bug

^ That horizontal rules!

The only thing that was slightly confusing was knowing when to turn the buttons off. I did have to edit the numbered and bulleted lists once because I toggled the button off too early and it unlisted the last item. Not a bug, every visual editor handles that one differently.

Not heavily tested and probably still full of bugs, but I just shipped the visual editor build.

Looking forward to your feedback!

littleFedi media management

Are you worried that your low-power device will be overwhelmed by external media caching?

Don't worry, we've already thought of that!

littleFedi offers 4 media management options:

  • "No caching, no proxying": Media is fetched directly by the user from the originating instance.
  • "Proxy only mode" (like this instance): The instance proxies requests so media is always served to the user through it. The originating instance will never see littleFedi users' requests.
  • "Lazy caching mode": Requests are proxied and then cached locally, so subsequent requests are served directly from the local cache.
  • "Full caching mode": Similar to Mastodon, it fetches and stores media locally as soon as it is processed by the instance.

For both caching modes, you can store media locally or use an external S3-compatible service. Moving between storage types is supported natively, without needing external tools like rclone.
